Conspiracy Theories: History, Ubiquity, Causes, and Consequences

Recent headlines claim that society has entered a new "golden age" of conspiracy theories, fake news, and misinformation. In this talk, we will explore how beliefs in conspiracy theories have changed over time, the common causes of beliefs in conspiracy theories, and potential consequences, as well as the role of social media and political leaders in fostering conspiracy beliefs. Particular attention will be paid to instances where intuition and popular narratives diverge from scientific work on the political psychology of conspiracy beliefs.

About the Speaker

Adam Enders, Ph.D.

Adam Enders is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Louisville where he studies and teaches on the psychology of conspiracy theories and misinformation and political polarization.
